Rebecca’s Training Tidbits

Rebecca’s Training Tidbits

Training for your first major event is an experience in itself.

I am currently training for the ITU Auckland Triathlon in November, which doubles as the trial for worlds 2012, with less than a month to go now the nerves are really starting to kick in!

I began competing in triathlons last year with a little push from my colleague and fellow triathlete Bruce Baxter. I’ve always been a runner and dabbled in swimming, though biking was very new to me.

For me having a reliable, driven group of people to train with has been key, without them I don’t think I would have progressed this far.

Building my sessions up slowly was really important to prevent fatigue and injury, I also made sure I brought the right gear and went through my paces with technique in all disciplines. Despite this I still managed to sprain both ankles, have on again off again shin splints and a niggly shoulder to boot. With the combined use of good shoes, formthotics, fortnightly sports massage (a training session in itself!) and a touch of physiotherapy I’ve been able to manage these complaints well without too much interference to my training program.

Hopefully all the time and effort I have put in will pay off on the day and the next time you hear from me I’ll have good news – wish me luck!
