Many of you will notice driving down Montreal St that our corner has got some fencing around it. The building on the corner is coming down however we have been told this will have minimal effect on us. When coming to PodiatryMed you will need to come in from the Cashel St end turning in by the Bridge of Remebrance. We still have our fabulous running track out on the riverbank and it looks fabulous with the Autumn leaves dropping at the moment.

We look forward to seeing you in the clinic shortly. To make an appointment please call Bex on 0508 508 508

I am injured. 10 weeks ago I suffered a significant tear in my right calf muscle. It actually doesn’t hurt much, but what really hurts is that I can’t run for sometime yet. It finished off a rather awful year. The much used cliché – what doesn’t break you makes you stronger; I am hopefully going to prove this!

I have been very lucky to have had few running injuries throughout my 35 years of running. This was a bit of bad luck, but I am fortunate to have the best rehab team in the world at my disposal and will follow all the recommended protocols. I am also lucky that in Christchurch we have some up to the minute ultrasound imaging equipment. The staff at Reflect Ultrasound have been awesome at re-imaging my injury every few weeks. We normally don’t do this and usually rely on clinical feedback. It has helped me not do ‘too much too soon’. Interestingly pain does not always match well with damage done. Achilles strains and plantar fascia injuries are good examples of this. I have had a number of patients with tears in these areas which haven’t been as painful as some sprains. If we hadn’t had the detailed ultrasound information then the danger is doing more significant damage and much longer rehab times.

The good news is I have a new bike. The guys at John Bull Cycles have set me up with a speedy time trial bike. I have done a comprehensive position set-up and can happily report that the bike and I are at one. I just can’t wait to race again – just another test to my very tested patience. Get those niggles checked before there are tears!

Paul is the new 2012 New Zealand elite men’s time trial champion.

This year has seen you achieve some great wins already. How did you feel when you crossed the line and won the New Zealand elite men’s time trial champion title? What was going though your head?Paul: To be honest once I had crossed the finish line I predicted that I hadn’t gone fast enough – bad thought to have – because not only does it put a dampener on things but it also inhibits you from focusing on going absolutely balls out! AFTER I found out I was like “cool”, but it really only started to sink in and feel good the week after once the road race was done and dusted and I had time to relax. I’m super stoked with what I’ve achieved and now more motivated to achieve greater goals.

What are the greatest challenges you have to face as an elite level cyclist?Paul: Getting the right balance of training and life (family and work) so that you not only perform at your peak but also have a good life!

What are your goals for the rest of the year?Paul: Complete the press up challenge (1 press up more for every day of the year – 366 on December 31st). On the cycling side of things… this year I’m really motivated for a result in the OCBC Singapore Pro Criterium in March, Tour de Korea in April and Tour of Southland in November.

How has Bruce and the Team at PodiatryMed assisted you to achieve your goals?Paul: I’ve worked with Bruce since 2001 – that’s 11 years so he knows me and my feet pretty well! Prevention, that’s where he’s helped, preventing injuries and getting more force into each pedal stroke!

As a cycle coach what would be your tips for those wanting to start cycling this year?Paul: Find the right balance for yourself between work, play (cycling) and social. Get as much advice as you can from those around you and trial it to find out what works best for you.Paul Odlin is a cycle coach based in Christchurch and an elite athlete worth keeping an eye on this year! www.christchurchcyclecoaching.co.nz

Last time you heard from me I was preparing for the ITU Auckland Triathlon in November 2011, this race doubled as the first age group selection race for World Triathlon Champs later this year. The nerves leading up to the race were nothing compared to D day, I almost had to forfeit breakfast!!

Luckily I had an incredible support crew – My baby sister Gabrielle (whose magic hands fixed my random back pain the night before), Dad, Bruce and his wife Deb who successfully calmed my pre-race jitters. When the start gun fired I put my nervous energy to good use – the swim and bike legs went relatively well but I got the stitch half way through the run.

I ended up finishing 4th in my age group and qualified for the New Zealand Age Group world’s team for 2012, not bad for my first trial ever! I’m really looking forward to representing NZ at Worlds in Auckland on labour weekend this year and am intrigued to see what another 8 months of hard training can achieve.

These creams have been developed, to treat common foot issues, by Podiatrist Bruce Baxter and a medical Doctor specialising in natural remedies.

Skin Harmony

As the name suggests this cream is formulated to replenish moisture back into the skin. With the homeopathic combination of marigold, bee sting and nettle its soothing properties minimise skin irritations and dryness leaving behind soft, hydrated skin. Infused with rose geranium oil it also leaves your feet smelling wonderful!

Trauma

Trauma is designed to alleviate muscle aches, cramps, pains and bruising. Arnica, rue and daisy are best known for their healing, anti-inflammatory properties. Trauma cream is most effective when massaged into affected areas daily providing relief from injury, leaving behind a lovely sent of lemon.

Great value at $15 for 50g – ask your podiatrist for a sample on your next visit.

Training for your first major event is an experience in itself.

I am currently training for the ITU Auckland Triathlon in November, which doubles as the trial for worlds 2012, with less than a month to go now the nerves are really starting to kick in!

I began competing in triathlons last year with a little push from my colleague and fellow triathlete Bruce Baxter. I’ve always been a runner and dabbled in swimming, though biking was very new to me.

For me having a reliable, driven group of people to train with has been key, without them I don’t think I would have progressed this far.

Building my sessions up slowly was really important to prevent fatigue and injury, I also made sure I brought the right gear and went through my paces with technique in all disciplines. Despite this I still managed to sprain both ankles, have on again off again shin splints and a niggly shoulder to boot. With the combined use of good shoes, formthotics, fortnightly sports massage (a training session in itself!) and a touch of physiotherapy I’ve been able to manage these complaints well without too much interference to my training program.

Hopefully all the time and effort I have put in will pay off on the day and the next time you hear from me I’ll have good news – wish me luck!
